I have seen lots of Instagram pictures of people in their campervans, which look very romantic. I wondered if I could create this feeling at home and decided to pimp up my parents car and sleep in there for three nights.
Last summer, when my boyfriend and me went to France, we also slept in the car. We wanted to drive as far as possible during the night and when we both got too tired, we decided to sleep on the parking lot of a motorway service area. We would hang some towels on the doors and locked the car. But because it was so warm, we left open the windows about 15cm. My boyfriend woke up because he heard some noise. It was his belt clattering in his trousers, while two hands were searching them for valuables. I woke up because he shouted out loud. Luckily the person ran away and didn't take anything, but it was quite a frightening experience. Nevertheless, I wanted to try it out at home.
I prepared the car by folding down the backseats and placing an old mattress and a duvet inside. My mum gave me some fabric remnants, kitchen towels and a sun visor that I hung inside the windows to have a bit more privacy, as I was located in the middle of their neighbourhood.
I brought a little lamp, which works with batteries, to have some light during the night. As I knew, that it can still get very cold at night, I made myself a hot water bottle and some tea in a thermos flask.
To be honest, I wasn't that eager to leave the house to spend the night in the car. But once I was in there, it was surprisingly cozy and warm under the thick sheets. Shortly after switching off the light, I got a little shocked, as I heard some very weird sounds coming directly from the roof of the car. After a moment, I realized, that it must be a cat or another animal and it vanished very fast. I didn't have any problems falling asleep afterwards.
Waking up in the morning was very nice. The sun was shining and it was light and comfortable in my little sleeping spot.
The tea in the thermos flask was still warm and I just stayed there a little longer. After a while, I decided to get some breakfast. I opened up the trunk lid to have some more space. I really enjoyed starting my morning like that and I really felt close to being on the road.
It was raining the other two nights, but I didn't mind. It actually felt even cozier to be inside my warm sleeping cave hearing the raindrops on the roof. Only in the morning, it wasn't that nice anymore. So I had to have breakfast inside the house.
This is clearly my favourite experiment so far. I really loved this road trip feeling and it was the perfect mix of comfort and adventure. So I highly recommend everyone who loves to be on the road or wanted to do it for so long, to pimp up your car a bit and create this experience at home.
